Commission FAQ

When embarking on a commission, there are many questions that people have.  I hope that the following FAQ will answer any questions that you may have.

What does the client need to provide?

If you are wanting a custom work based upon a photograph, that photo needs to be an original non-copyrighted image.  It can be sent to me in the form of a digital file (jpg. etc.)  The photo must be clear, the better the photo, the better the outcome.  I need to be able to read the details to do my best work.  Older photos can be scanned into a digital file.  I ask that you do not send physical photos so that your keepsakes are not compromised. I also ask that no more than two photos be sent, as they have different light sources and colors change dramatically.

Is there a contract?

Yes, I do use a contract to protect both parties once we’ve come to an agreement. I can send you a sample copy of the contract if interested.

Must a deposit be made in advance?

I do ask for half of the fee up front in the form of a deposit.  Once the deposit is made, I then order the materials for your piece and work begins. At the time of shipping the remainder of the payment is due.

What does the process look like?

Once the image you are commissioning and the deposit have been received, I begin the sketch.  I will send you a photo of the sketch for your approval before moving on to the finish work (shading or color). At this time if there are revisions or changes to be made, I will be happy to make those changes.  Once the color begins, it is very hard to make changes without having to start over.  I will also send update photos, if requested, as the piece moves along, and a final proof at the end prior to payment.

Is there a refund policy?

While I’ve never had to personally issue a refund, I have stated my criteria below.

Due to the one of a kind nature of commission work, there will be no refund if:

  1. The sketch has been approved prior to starting the finish work.

  2. The proof has been approved  prior to final payment.

Having said that, I want my customers to be happy with the final product and work very hard to see that come to fruition. Should the customer not wish to purchase the piece at the end, the deposit is non-refundable.

When can I expect to have the finished piece?

This largely depends on the size of the work and how complex the piece is. I will let you know at the time of deposit how long I believe the piece will take me.  I generally deliver ahead of time, but would rather overestimate than underestimate how long a piece will take.

If there are any questions that I haven’t answered here, please feel free to contact me and ask away.  I’m happy to answer any inquiries you may have.
